D.C. Stunned After The Latest Government Resignation Announced

Another of DC’s power politicians has just left office. And even though he’s blaming Trump, I think the truth is pretty clear – DC isn’t as fun without the swamp.

Fact is, the cleaner DC gets, the harder it is for traditional politicians to survive. So it’s no surprise that many of them would leave. But I didn’t expect this guy to leave.

After all, Walter Shaub is – or was – director of the Office of Government Ethics.

The Washington Free Beacon reports:

Office of Government Ethics Director Walter M. Shaub announced his resignation on Thursday after months of conflict with the Trump administration, notably regarding divestiture from President Donald Trump’s businesses and delays in disclosing ethics waivers for appointees.

Shaub, an attorney, expressed dissatisfaction with the “current situation” at the OGE and announced he accepted a new job at the nonpartisan Campaign Legal Center, NPR reports.

Shaub did not elaborate further on the problems he had at the OGE, but he did mention wanting greater freedom to pursue reform.

I’ll emphasize that last part – Shaub didn’t elaborate further. And he doesn’t in his NPR interview, either.

“The current situation has made it clear that the ethics program needs to be stronger than it is. At the Campaign Legal Center, I’ll have more freedom to push for reform.”

What’s odd about Shaub’s silence? He wasn’t silent – at all – when he was still working.

In fact, Shaub had a history of mocking Trump’s tweets with the Office of Government Ethics’ twitter account.

It wasn’t the only time Shaub spoke up. He’d been reprimanded by Congress before when his Trump criticisms went too far.

And given his history of Democratic support, it’s hard not to wonder if he’s resigning now simply because no one is listening to him anymore.

Shaub received a bipartisan rebuke from Congress shortly after Trump took office for criticizing the president in a closed-door meeting.

Some critics have questioned his objectivity toward Trump, citing his political donations to former President Barack Obama and prior defense of Hillary Clinton’s ethics.

Speaking up when working in DC, and not speaking up now that he’s leaving. That simply doesn’t fit the pattern of someone who needs to speak the truth.

It honestly fits the pattern of someone who needs attention.
