Democrat Deletes Trail of Progressive Posts While Pitching Herself as Moderate in Hotly Contested House Race: Report
A Democratic congressional hopeful in New Jersey is under fire after it was revealed she deleted a string of past social media posts praising high-profile progressives and attacking President Donald Trump—despite now running as a moderate in a GOP-leaning district.
Rebecca Bennett, a Navy veteran and Air Force National Guard member, is seeking the Democratic nomination to challenge incumbent Republican Rep. Thomas Kean Jr. in New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District.
The Cook Political Report rates the race as “Lean Republican” and Bennett has emphasized a moderate message on the campaign trail.
However, a review by Fox News of Bennett’s X account, which was recently rebranded from @BigRedBecks to @RebeccaForNJ07, shows numerous deleted posts that may undermine her centrist image.
Among the erased messages were statements of admiration for progressive icons such as Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D) and former Vice President Kamala Harris.
“Love her,” Bennett posted in a now-deleted 2019 message about Warren, per the outlet.
In another, she commented, “I love everything about this,” in response to a video mashup of Warren set to a Taylor Swift song, adding, “(Except the misogyny that makes it real…) #TeamWarren.”
Bennett also removed posts applauding Harris after she was announced as Joe Biden’s running mate in the 2020 presidential election.
“Let’s Goooooo,” she wrote at the time.
In addition, Bennett shared support for New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker (D) in a 2020 post that has since been deleted, calling him the “best senator.”
She also praised Rep. Jason Crow (D-CO) during Trump’s first impeachment trial.
“Officially a @JasonCrowCO6 fan,” she wrote on January 21, 2020. “I’m a vet who also didn’t have the equipment I needed to do my job, so this is personal for me too. #ImpeachmentTrial.”
During the 2020 civil unrest that followed the death of George Floyd, Bennett posted support for former Obama strategist David Plouffe’s call to “hold hearings” on law enforcement’s handling of the riots.
That post has also been removed from her feed.
When asked by Fox News about the deletions, Bennett’s campaign did not offer a specific explanation.
Instead, her senior advisor Dan Bryan responded, “It’s no surprise to see the NRCC and conservative news outlets start attacking Rebecca, because they know she is a serious threat to beat Congressman Tom Kean next November and flip NJ7.”
“Rebecca and her campaign will continue to ignore recycled bad faith attacks from right-wing outlets and focus on her record serving this country and Congressman Kean’s failure to deliver for working families in our district.”
The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) responded by accusing Bennett of concealing her political record.
“It’s clear Rebecca Bennett is desperately trying to run away from her past and cover up her radical, out of touch agenda,” said NRCC spokeswoman Maureen O’Toole. “But New Jersey voters see right through her act and know exactly who she is: a radical scam artist who can’t be trusted.”
Bennett is not the first Democrat in the district to face backlash over prior social media activity. In the last election cycle, Democratic candidate Sue Altman was criticized for deleting past posts that were critical of law enforcement.
With Republicans holding a narrow 220-215 majority in the U.S. House, the NJ-07 race is expected to draw national attention in the upcoming 2026 midterms.
