McDonald’s Shift Manager Hospitalized in ICU After Co-Worker Allegedly Throws Scalding Hot Oil in Brutal Attack
A 20-year-old McDonald’s employee in Northern California is hospitalized in critical condition after police say a co-worker allegedly threw hot cooking oil on him during a violent workplace attack that left him with severe burns across nearly a quarter of his body.
Authorities say the incident occurred on May 30 at a McDonald’s in Yuba City and remains under active investigation.
Jacob Smith, who worked as a shift manager at the restaurant, was allegedly attacked by 23-year-old co-worker Jalani Bluett while preparing to wrap up his shift.
According to Smith’s mother, Amber Smith, her son was in an office counting money when he suddenly turned and was struck with the hot oil without warning.
She described the assault as so fast that he had no opportunity to react.
Smith suffered severe second-degree burns covering approximately 22 percent of his body, including his face, neck, right arm, and back.
He was rushed for emergency treatment and later admitted to an intensive care burn unit. Medical staff are now working to stabilize his condition while preparing for additional procedures, according to Fox Business.
Doctors expect Smith will require multiple skin graft surgeries due to the depth of the burns, and his recovery is expected to be long and painful.
His family says he remains under specialized care as physicians monitor him closely for infection risks and long-term complications.
Authorities have not released a motive for the alleged attack, and investigators continue to interview witnesses and review evidence from the scene, KCRA reported.
As the community response grew, support for Smith quickly spread online.
Bluett was identified as the suspect shortly after the incident and allegedly fled the scene before law enforcement arrived. He was later located and arrested following a search assisted by public tips.
Bluett is currently being held without bail and faces multiple charges, including assault with a deadly weapon, mayhem, and battery causing serious bodily injury.
Officials have not indicated whether the two men had any prior conflict before the attack.
In the days following the incident, Smith’s mother launched a GoFundMe to help cover medical expenses, lost income, and ongoing household costs while he remains unable to work.
The fundraiser describes Jacob as a hardworking young man who had been building his future and preparing for marriage before the attack abruptly changed his life.
The campaign has drawn widespread public support, raising more than $146,000 as of Tuesday afternoon as donations continue to grow.
The page also notes that Smith faces an extended recovery period, placing significant financial strain on the family as medical bills and daily expenses accumulate.
In an update shared through the fundraiser, Smith’s mother reflected on his emotional strength and faith during recovery, writing that she has witnessed his resilience during some of his most difficult moments.
She added that he continues to lean on his belief that “God has a bigger purpose” and concluded the message with a statement of faith: “God is good all the time, all the time God is good!”
Despite the severity of his injuries, Smith has reportedly remained focused on recovery and expressed gratitude for the support he has received from family, friends, and the wider community.
Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing as detectives continue to piece together what led to the violent incident. Bluett remains in custody as the case proceeds through the court system.
