Georgia Mother Uses Gas Pump to Fight Off Alleged Child Kidnapper
A Georgia mother used a gas pump hose to defend her children during a frightening late-night encounter at a Marietta gas station after police say a man attempted to grab one of her children.
Newly released surveillance footage captured the tense confrontation as the mother stepped in to protect her family.
The incident happened shortly after midnight on July 23 at a Shell gas station on Delk Road in Marietta, Georgia.
Police identified the suspect as 30-year-old Jerahn Tucker, who was arrested and charged in connection with the alleged confrontation.
According to police, Tucker approached the family’s vehicle while the mother was pumping gas.
Investigators say the situation escalated when Tucker allegedly began trying to access the vehicle and move toward the children. Surveillance footage shows Tucker moving around the vehicle as one child attempted to get away.
The footage also shows Tucker allegedly opening the rear passenger door, where another child was seated. Authorities said the mother stepped between Tucker and her children as the situation escalated.
Police said the mother grabbed the gas pump hose and used it to keep Tucker away while trying to protect her children.
Two witnesses at the gas station can been seen in the footage rushing over to help, dropping what they were carrying and assisting the mother until police could arrive.
Marietta Police Department spokesperson Charles McPhilamy praised the mother and the bystanders for staying calm during the incident.
“The actions of the mother and everyone on the scene, their ability to remain calm under pressure and push him away, get him away from the children, get a hold of us so that we can get to the area allowed us to hold this individual accountable,” McPhilamy told WSB-TV.
According to FOX 5 Atlanta, an arrest warrant stated that the mother told investigators Tucker claimed he had a gun before the encounter became aggressive.
Police have not announced that a firearm was recovered from Tucker or his vehicle.
After the confrontation, police said Tucker left the gas station in his vehicle.
Officers later located him and took him into custody with assistance from Cobb County police, according to authorities. Tucker was booked into the Cobb County Jail and faces charges including attempted kidnapping and simple assault.
Police said Tucker was not wearing a shirt or shoes when he was arrested.
Officers also reportedly found a THC vape inside his vehicle. The manager of the Shell station told investigators that Tucker had previously been removed from the property multiple times.
Authorities have not released a motive for the alleged attack. Police spokesperson Charles McPhilamy said investigators are still trying to determine what led to the confrontation.
“The million-dollar question everyone watching is going to ask: Why did this happen? Why did this occur? And we don’t know those answers,” McPhilamy said.
Tucker remains in custody at the Cobb County Jail as the case moves forward.
The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of staying aware of one’s surroundings and remaining vigilant in public places, especially when children are present.
