AOC’s Relationship With Longtime Fiancé Collapsed Two Years Ago: TMZ
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and her longtime fiancé, Riley Roberts, reportedly ended their relationship and called off their engagement roughly two years ago, according to a new report.
TMZ reported Tuesday that Ocasio-Cortez, 36, and Roberts quietly separated after years together, confirming speculation surrounding the status of their relationship.
The report comes shortly after Ocasio-Cortez publicly revealed that she had begun the process of freezing her eggs.
Ocasio-Cortez and Roberts first met while attending Boston University when they were around 19 years old.
The pair reportedly met through a weekly student discussion event known as “Coffee & Conversations,” where students gathered to discuss politics, culture and other issues.
They dated during college before separating after graduation, when Roberts returned to Arizona and Ocasio-Cortez remained on the East Coast.
The two later rekindled their relationship around 2015, and Roberts eventually moved to New York.
He remained largely outside the political spotlight as Ocasio-Cortez launched her congressional career and scored a surprise Democratic primary victory in 2018.
Ocasio-Cortez and Roberts became engaged in April 2022 during a trip to Puerto Rico.
“We got engaged last month in my family’s hometown in Puerto Rico,” Ocasio-Cortez said at the time.
The congresswoman said the couple had not yet made plans for a wedding and wanted time to enjoy their engagement before beginning the planning process.
The relationship reportedly ended approximately two years ago, though neither Ocasio-Cortez nor Roberts publicly announced the breakup at the time.
Puck News Chief Washington Correspondent Leigh Ann Caldwell said she learned from a Capitol Hill source about 18 months ago that the engagement had been called off.
Caldwell also noted that Ocasio-Cortez had stopped wearing her engagement ring months before she learned about the reported breakup, per Trending Politics.
Multiple congressional sources told TMZ that Roberts had not been publicly seen with Ocasio-Cortez for an extended period.
Ocasio-Cortez’s office declined to comment on the breakup report, according to TMZ.
The revelation comes shortly after Ocasio-Cortez publicly discussed her decision to freeze her eggs.
The New York Democrat shared details of the process on Instagram, saying she had considered the procedure for an extended period and had saved money to pay for it.
“This is a choice that I am making to feel more in control of my life,” Ocasio-Cortez said.
She described the process as daunting but said she felt empowered by her decision to preserve her fertility.
Ocasio-Cortez also acknowledged that publicly discussing such a personal issue carried political risks.
“If people want to make assumptions about my decision, let them make those assumptions,” she said. “I feel empowered to make this choice.”
Caldwell raised the possibility of a connection between the two developments in her own social media post, but neither Ocasio-Cortez nor Roberts has publicly said the reported breakup influenced her decision to freeze her eggs.
Ocasio-Cortez has generally kept details about her relationship with Roberts out of the public spotlight despite her growing national political profile.
The congresswoman has recently faced increasing speculation about her political future, including the possibility of a presidential or US Senate campaign in 2028.
Ocasio-Cortez has not announced plans to seek either office and has said her immediate focus remains on the upcoming midterm elections.
