Republican Announces Resignation Sooner Than Expected

Bill Johnson to Resign Earlier Than Expected to Become President of Youngstown State University

Republican U.S. Rep. Bill Johnson has announced his early resignation from the U.S. House of Representatives, effective January 21, as he prepares to take over as president of Youngstown State University.

Initially, Johnson was expected to begin his new role on March 15. However, Michael Peterson, chairman of the YSU Board of Trustees, confirmed the congressman’s earlier departure. Peterson expressed enthusiasm about Johnson’s early arrival at the university.

“With his contract indicating he would start prior to March 15, 2024, we are excited to have him on campus earlier than anticipated,” Peterson wrote. He also mentioned that Johnson would continue visiting the campus to meet with students, faculty and staff as his schedule permits.

In late November, Johnson had announced his decision to leave the House. Despite his impending departure, he remained committed to fulfilling several key objectives. On X, Johnson outlined his remaining agenda.

“There is still much left on my agenda to do before I depart Congress, including doing all I can to help pass tax exemption legislation to benefit the people of East Palestine as well as a broader rail safety bill, streamline America’s LNG export process, and advance a responsible budget and spending package for the remainder of this fiscal year. It’s business as usual,” he wrote.

Johnson’s early resignation will slightly reduce the House Republicans’ already narrow majority, bringing it to 219-213. His tenure at Youngstown State University will commence on January 22.

  • It’s all about themselves not the people who voted them in. He knows what a short margin the republicans hold.
