13-Year-Old Student Who Pleaded Not Guilty to Murdering His Mom Makes a Chilling Confession

13-Year-Old Student Calmly Confesses to Murdering His Mom After Pleading Not Guilty

In Hialeah, Florida, a shocking confession emerged from a 13-year-old eighth-grade student, Derek Rosa, who admitted to murdering his mother, 39-year-old Irina Garcia last October.

The confession was made during an interrogation by the Hialeah Police Department, as captured on police video. Despite initially pleading not guilty to the murder on October 31, Rosa, charged as an adult, revealed the details of the crime.

During the interrogation, after being read his Miranda rights, Rosa described his academic performance and his life divided between his parents. He recounted the events of the day his mother was murdered, detailing his routine of going to school and returning home.

“I woke up, went to the kitchen, I grabbed one of the kitchen knives, and then I went to her room and I …,” Rosa paused.

“It’s ok, you can say it,” one of the detectives encouraged him.

“I killed her,” he confessed.

“You killed her,” the detective asked, to which Rosa nodded.

Rosa then described the knife used in the crime, indicating it was about a foot long with a purple handle. He explained to the detectives that he cut his mother on the neck, hitting an artery. Garcia was asleep when Rosa entered her room, and he admitted to cursing in Spanish before stabbing her “purposely” in the neck.

After the murder, Rosa attempted to take his own life using one of his stepdad’s guns but couldn’t go through with it. Instead, he called a friend he met through online gaming, confessed to the murder and sent pictures of his mother and himself. Eventually, he called 911 and requested police to come to his house, admitting he had killed his mom.

When the detectives inquired why he stabbed his mother, Rosa requested to use the bathroom. Upon returning, the conversation shifted to the types of video games he plays. The detective revisited the question about his motive for the murder.

“Do I have to say it now,” Rosa asked.

“Yeah, get it off your chest,” one of the detectives responded.

“Can I wait for a lawyer,” Rosa asked the detectives.

One of the detectives clarified that it was Rosa’s choice to have a lawyer present and asked if he wanted to stop the interview.

“Do you want us to stop the interview,” the detective asked the boy.

“Yes,” Rosa replied, leading to the end of the interview and the camera being turned off.

Rosa may face trial next month for the murder of his mother.
