DNC Turns On State’s Democratic Party Over ‘Detrimental’ Primary Process

DNC Takes Shot at New Hampshire Democratic Party for ‘Detrimental’ Primary Process

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) has expressed strong criticism toward the New Hampshire Democratic Party’s planned primary process, labeling it as “detrimental.”

In a letter addressed to Raymond Buckley, the chair of the New Hampshire Democratic Party, DNC Rules and Bylaws Committee (RBC) co-chairs Minyon Moore and James Roosevelt Jr. stated, “The event on January 23, 2024 cannot be used as the first determining stage of the state’s delegate selection process and is considered detrimental.”

“The NHDP must take steps to educate the public that January 23rd is a non-binding presidential preference event and is meaningless and the NHDP and presidential candidates should take all steps possible not to participate,” the letter, obtained by Politico, further elaborated.

This development follows the announcement by New Hampshire Secretary of State David Scanlan, a Republican, that the state would hold its primary on January 23. This decision conflicts with the Democrats’ efforts to have the party’s first primary in South Carolina on February 3.

The DNC’s letter also mentioned a delegate selection process planned for January 6, advising that this process has not been approved by the RBC and thus is not a valid route to becoming a delegate to the National Convention.

In response, Buckley stated to Politico, “It is nothing new. They’ve been saying that for a year, yet we persist.”

Historically, Iowa and New Hampshire have been the first states in the Democrats’ election process. However, President Biden and the DNC have sought to change the primary calendar this year, starting with South Carolina, where Biden won by a handy margin in the 2020 Democratic primary. The DNC claims that its effort to shift the primary schedule is an attempt to elevate diversity among the electorate for this critical early primary.
