Former President Donald Trump is facing multiple legal battles and has an army of attorneys and advisers to defend him against scores of criminal and civil charges.
If convicted on all counts, Trump would be barred from doing business in New York, fined between $350–$400 million, prohibited from running for president and imprisoned for the rest of his life.
The stakes are high, but the former president has remained optimistic that he will prevail in the end.
On Monday, however, one of his legal teams announced major changes — attorney Joe Tacopina, who represented Trump in the Stormy Daniels “hush money” civil case, withdrew himself.
Notably, Tacopina previously represented Trump in a defamation case brought forward by E. Jean Carroll, which resulted in a split decision — assault charges were dismissed but $5 million in fines were imposed.
Carroll is currently appealing the case and seeking an additional $10 million in punitive damages.
Writing to Judge Juan Merchan, the Manhattan-based judge in the case, Tacopina stated, “I write to respectfully inform the Court that my firm, Chad Seigel and I hereby withdraw as counsel for Defendant Donald J. Trump in this proceeding.”
MSNBC News reported that Susan Necheles is currently Trump’s lead counsel in the case and suggested that Trump and Tacopina were not together in how to move forward with the case.
Steven Cheung, a spokesman for the former president, told Reuters that Trump “has the most experienced, qualified, disciplined, and overall strongest legal team ever assembled as he continues to fight for America and Americans against these partisan, Crooked Joe Biden-led election interference hoaxes.”
The U.S. Supreme Court will take up several Trump-related cases in the next few months, which could significantly diminish the prosecution’s attempt to prosecute Trump on election fraud and J6 conspiracy/sedition charges.
The high court will also review a challenge to the Colorado State Supreme Court’s ruling that Trump was ineligible to have his name on the 2024 ballot due to violating the 14th Amendment.
Trump has maintained his innocence in all of the approximately 100 charges that have been leveled against him.
