Pirate’s Cove resort has responded to a case involving two Kentucky mothers, Amber Shearer and Dongayla Dobson, who allege they were drugged and sexually assaulted by employees at the resort.

The women described an attack in broad daylight on the beach during a stop by their Carnival cruise ship at Grand Island. They recall being offered a drink special by a resort employee, which led to an overwhelming sense of intoxication within mere minutes. A staff member then led them to a secluded area under the guise of searching for shells, where Shearer experienced the horror of awakening to find herself being raped by a man in uniform.

However, Pirate’s Cove has contested the women’s version of events, citing discrepancies with security footage.

“Upon further review of the surveillance videos, the allegations made onsite, and in subsequent social media posts and news stories, conflict with what the time-stamped surveillance videos contain,” the resort stated, as reported by the Daily Mail.

Despite this claim, the resort acknowledged the termination of the two accused employees for conduct that breached its zero-tolerance policy.

Following the incident, Shearer and Dobson, bearing cuts and bruises, reported the assault to the Royal Bahamas Police. Authorities have since arrested two men, ages 40 and 54, from South Bahamia and Eight Mile Rock, respectively. The investigation into the allegations remains active.

Carnival Cruise Lines has confirmed that the two guests reported the assault while aboard the Carnival Elation, offering support to them as they returned to Jacksonville. The victims recounted their ordeal, noting an immediate and alarming effect after consuming their drinks, suspecting the presence of substances other than alcohol.

“Less than a few [sips] into the second drink, we knew something was wrong. Something was terribly wrong,” Shearer said during an interview with NewsNation’s Cuomo.

The aftermath of the attack left the women with a cocktail of drugs in their systems, identified in toxicology tests, including benzodiazepines, with minimal alcohol detected. They also reported bruising on their legs. Their experience casts a shadow over the Bahamian Prime Minister Philip Davis’ assurances, just days prior to their trip, of the Bahamas being a “safe” tourist destination.
