Server Who Received $10K Tip Gets Axed — Owners Respond

Server Who Received $10K Tip Fired — Owners Say It Has Nothing To Do With Viral Gesture

A waitress from Michigan, Linsey Boyd, found herself unemployed shortly after receiving a $10,000 tip.

The Mason Jar Cafe in Benton Harbor stated the firing was a business decision, unrelated to the generous tip left by an anonymous patron. This customer had left the substantial amount on a $32.43 bill, requesting it be shared among the entire wait staff, resulting in over $1,100 for each employee, according to the Detroit Free Press.

“I will say it had nothing to do with the tip. She did receive the entire tip, she did not pay taxes on it (the business did). Yes, she shared the tip at the request of the man that left it,” owners Able Martinez and Jayme Cousins explained on Facebook.

Boyd recounted that tensions rose within the establishment following the tip, leading to management giving her time off for mental health. Her subsequent inquiries about her employment status hinted at confusion and distress over her sudden job loss.

“We do truly care about our staff,” the couple insisted, highlighting their long-standing relationship with their employees, including efforts to support them through college and the COVID pandemic.

Cousins emphasized the difficulty of their decision, stating, “We clearly would not let someone go for no reason at all.” Despite the controversy, the decision was described as a necessary business move.

Following her dismissal, Boyd decided to spend time with family away from town, seeking solace after the eventful week.
