Donald Trump Jr. has made his criteria for a vice-presidential candidate clear, emphasizing the need for a combative partner who can withstand and counteract the political hostility expected in the upcoming election.
In a conversation with The New York Post, Trump Jr. shared his perspective on the qualities necessary for the role in light of the current political climate.
“What I want in that role is I want a fighter,” Trump Jr. said. “I understand what they are going to throw at us.
“In 2016 you needed someone to balance out [the ticket] — that’s where Mike Pence made sense, sort of the yin and yang, but [given] the vicious nature of the swamp and the insanity we see on a daily basis, you need someone who can take those hits,” said Trump Jr.
He has been advocating for individuals like Senator J.D. Vance of Ohio, Vivek Ramaswamy, a biotech entrepreneur and former Republican presidential candidate, and Tucker Carlson, the former Fox News host, as potential candidates.
Trump Jr., expressing his intention to be involved in the 2024 transition team should his father win the presidency again, noted his focus would be on preventing “D.C. swamp rats” from infiltrating the administration.
“Mostly just to make sure we stop some of the D.C. swamp rats and the swamp creatures from getting in there and doing their thing,” he added.
Further discussions about the transition team mentioned the possibility of including John Ratcliffe, former director of national intelligence, and Cliff Sims, a former special assistant to President Trump, highlighting their experience from Trump Sr.’s first term.
“There are so many great people to choose from now with the first four years of the administration you have a good understanding of who would be great and loyal and implement the America First policies,” Trump Jr. opined.
Addressing the aggressive stance his father has taken against President Biden, particularly regarding the potential implications of indicting a former president, Trump Jr. downplayed the severity of such statements, labeling them as “jokes.”
“He’s going to lead the country the way it’s supposed to be led,” Trump Jr. said.
