Harmeet Dhillon Urges Americans to Exercise Fifth Amendment After FBI Crashes Women’s Home Over Social Media Posts

Lawyer and Republican official Harmeet Dhillon, responding to a video in which two purported FBI agents interrogate a woman over Facebook posts, has urged her followers to refrain from talking to law enforcement agencies without legal counsel.

In the video posted on social media, a woman is confronted by two men claiming to be federal agents, who divulge that they were sent to question the woman about certain Facebook posts. The purported FBI agents refused to identify themselves or show credentials.

The incident would appear to be the inspiration behind Dhillon’s words of advice, reflecting consensus among legal experts that voluntarily engaging with law enforcement is almost always ill-advised.

“This is your regular reminder that unless you actually initiated the encounter, do not engage with law enforcement (especially federal) without the advice of counsel,” Dhillon wrote, adding that she had self-censored a more colorful version of the exhortation out of respect for Good Friday.

Dhillon’s advice is informed by her considerable legal experience. A graduate of the University of Virginia Law School, Dhillon has previously worked as an attorney for James Damore and Andy Ngo in cases relating to their protected speech. She has also used her legal acumen to challenge COVID-19 restrictions in California.
