Alec Baldwin’s Former Movie Armorer Sentenced To Prison Over Killing of Halyna Hutchins

Former Alec Baldwin Movie Armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed Sentenced To 18-Months Prison Over Killing of Halyna Hutchins

“Rust” armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed has received an 18-month prison sentence following her conviction for involuntary manslaughter in the 2021 shooting death of Halyna Hutchins.

Although Alec Baldwin, 66, discharged the firearm, the jury determined that Gutierrez-Reed had mistakenly loaded a live round into the revolver used on the Santa Fe, New Mexico, movie set, USA TODAY reports.

Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer referenced Gutierrez-Reed’s jailhouse phone calls, citing statements made to relatives and friends as evidence of her failure to accept responsibility.

“In your allocution you said you were sorry but not … sorry for what you did,” Marlowe Sommer remarked. “It was your attorney that had to tell the court that you were remorseful.”

“The word remorse: a deep regret coming from a sense of guilt for past wrongs,” she continued. “That’s not you.”

Gutierrez-Reed has remained in custody since her conviction by the Santa Fe jury on March 6, following a trial spanning several weeks.

The movie-set armorer confronted the possibility of up to 18 months in prison and a $5,000 fine for her involvement in the unintentional shooting death of Hutchins, a cinematographer on the set of the low-budget Western, in October 2021.

Gutierrez-Reed’s lawyer, Jason Bowles, notably petitioned for probation, citing her lack of prior criminal history.

The jury deliberated for approximately two hours before delivering its verdict, with one juror commenting afterward that Gutierrez-Reed had failed to fulfill “her job” in ensuring weapon safety on set, USA TODAY highlighted.

Gutierrez-Reed addressed the court, expressing her sorrow for Hutchins’ family, friends, and the wider film industry, stating her “heart aches.”

“I am deeply saddened by the way the media sensationalized our tragic incident and depicted me as a monstrous figure, which is entirely contrary to my true intentions,” she shared.

The armorer appealed to the judge for a probationary sentence, expressing her willingness to comply with any mandated classes.

In an email sent to USA TODAY last Tuesday, Bowles stated that the legal team representing the movie armorer intends to appeal her prison sentence “on multiple grounds.”

Attorney Gloria Allred, who represents Hutchins’ parents and sister, remarked in a statement that Gutierrez-Reed’s sentence is “appropriate,” citing the armorer’s “failure to express any remorse herself at the hearing” and “her attitude in many jailhouse calls.”

“The family just wanted justice for Halyna, and today the court handed down the maximum sentence possible under New Mexico law,” Allred said.

“We now look forward to the trial of Alec Baldwin where a different jury will decide if Alec Baldwin is or is not guilty of involuntary manslaughter,” she continued. “We look forward to a just result in the next criminal case.”

Allred, also shared statements and videos from Hutchins’ family who originate from Kyiv, Ukraine.

“Time does not heal. … It gets worse and worse,” Hutchins’ mother Olga Solovey said in Ukrainian.

“After this tragedy, my life has been split into two — before and after. … I have hope that the guilty, those that are responsible for the death of my daughter, will be punished fairly and sentenced justly,” Solovey said in a separate statement.

Baldwin’s trial for his role in the shooting death of Hutchins commences on July 10, following his indictment in January for involuntary manslaughter.
