ICYMI: Dem State Senator Arrested Days After Pushing For ‘Safer Communities’

Minnesota Democrat State Senator Nicole Mitchell Arrested On Suspicion Of Burglary Days After Pushing For ‘Safer Communities’

Nicole Mitchell, a 49-year-old Democratic Minnesota state senator, was arrested Monday on suspicion of first-degree burglary related to an alleged home invasion in Detroit Lakes, a small community located 45 miles from the North Dakota border.

The Post Millennial reports that Mitchell, who represents the Minneapolis suburbs of Woodbury and Maplewood, which are over 200 miles southwest of Detroit Lakes, had recently been vocal about advocating for “safer communities” in her state, just days before her arrest.

Local police received reports of a burglary at a residence in the area on Monday morning. Following discussions with the homeowner, Mitchell was identified as a suspect, located, and taken into custody, per KVRR.

The outlet reported that dispatchers received a 911 call at 4:45 a.m. from a homeowner about “an active burglary in process at her residence,” Detroit Lakes Police Chief Steve Todd said in an interview.

Officers searched the home and arrested Mitchell, Todd added.

The Becker County Attorney’s Office has received the report and is reviewing it to determine whether to pursue charges against Mitchell. She is presently held in the Becker County Jail, and officials are expected to make a decision as early as Tuesday.

Mitchell notably shared a photo on her X account on April 16, posing alongside members of Moms Demand Action, a grassroots organization dedicated to ending gun violence in the United States.

She wrote: “Meaningful conversation today with [MDA] community members advocating for common sense gun reform & safer communities at [the Minnesota Legislature] –as well as providing Minnesotans the mental health services they need to #EndGunViolence in our neighborhoods.”

Mitchell had a career as a television and radio meteorologist and also served as a commander in the Air National Guard before her tenure in the state legislature.

Mitchell’s party has refrained from commenting on the situation, however, Republican leader Mark Johnson issued a statement condemning her alleged actions.

“The public expects Legislators to meet a high standard of conduct. As information comes out, we expect the consequences to meet the actions, both in the court of law, and in her role at the legislature,” he said.

The Senate Democratic Caucus said it’s “aware of the situation and has no comment pending further information,” in a statement following Mitchell’s arrest.

Users on X flocked to the platform to mock Mitchell, with one writing, “No wonder Senator Nicole Mitchell hates guns. She doesn’t want to be surprised by one when she breaks into a home.”

Others shared the story along with captions that said “you can’t make this stuff up” and “do I say, not as I do,” emphasizing the hypocrisy surrounding past statements from Mitchell and the actions leading up to her arrest.

“Guess she missed her own memo?” wrote The Conservative Brief on X.
