Pervy Red State Mayor Asks for ‘Grace and Mercy’ After Learning Fate
A Louisiana judge handed down a sentence Tuesday that left prosecutors reeling — just 90 days in jail for a former mayor found guilty of having sex with a 16-year-old boy at an alcohol-soaked party she threw at her own home.
Misty Roberts, 43, once led the city of DeRidder.
A jury convicted her in March on two counts — carnal knowledge of a juvenile and indecent behavior with a juvenile — after evidence placed her in a sexual encounter with a teenage guest during her son’s July 2024 birthday celebration.
The prosecution had asked Judge D. Kent Savoie for the maximum: 17 years behind bars. They argued Roberts had done nothing to demonstrate genuine remorse or accountability for her actions.
New York Post reported that prosecutor Charles Robinson made no effort to soften his assessment of the defendant. “This is not a dumb lady. This is somebody who managed an entire city budget,” he told the court, stating that Roberts “has not come to the realization of accountability.”
The judge disagreed with prosecutors on the appropriate punishment. Savoie imposed the 90-day jail term alongside two five-year suspended sentences, and ordered Roberts to register as a sex offender, complete therapy, and submit to regular drug and alcohol testing.
Before the sentence came down, the mother of the teenage victim stood before the courtroom and refused to let the moment pass quietly.
KPLC-TV said that she warned those listening not to be deceived by appearances. “Danger doesn’t always look like danger,” she said. “This predator has hair extensions, high heels, Botox and other augmentations.”
The word “predator” landed hard in a courtroom where, weeks earlier, jurors had reviewed text messages showing Roberts and her son coordinating the party — including exchanges about which alcoholic drinks the teenage attendees wanted.
Other messages from that same night showed Roberts’ son reacting to the unfolding situation, describing it as “crazy” while also telling his mother that his younger sister had broken down emotionally.
That younger sister later took the witness stand herself. She told the court she had seen her mother and the teenage victim “on top of each other” during the party.
Roberts’ ex-husband, Duncan Clanton, also testified against her. He told the court that Roberts had personally confessed the sexual encounter to him, and that their children had walked in and witnessed the two together.
Roberts admitted during sentencing that she had gone so far as to ask other people to lie on her behalf — driven by fear that Clanton would move to strip her of access to her children once the truth surfaced.
Facing the judge, Roberts called herself “an embarrassment” to the city she once governed.
She then appealed directly for leniency, framing her request in personal and religious terms. “I’m here just asking for grace and mercy and the opportunity to do what the Lord has asked me to do, which is be a mom,” Roberts said.
She also told the victim’s family that the weight of what happened would follow her permanently. “I will blame myself for the rest of my life,” she said, extending an apology for the suffering and public embarrassment the case had brought to their lives.
