Tragic Death Rocks US

Greg Abbott Announces Tragic Death of His Family’s Golden Retriever ‘Pancake’

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) announced Wednesday that his family’s beloved golden retriever, Pancake, has died at the age of 11 after spending more than a decade as a familiar presence at the Governor’s Mansion.

Abbott shared the news in a post on X, accompanied by several photos highlighting Pancake’s life alongside the governor, First Lady Cecilia Abbott and visitors to the mansion.

“Cecilia and I are so grateful for the 11 years that Pancake brought joy and affection to our family and to guests of the Mansion,” Abbott wrote. “She will be greatly missed by all the Texans who met her.”

The governor did not disclose the cause of Pancake’s death.

The Abbott family welcomed Pancake into their home in 2015, shortly after Greg Abbott was sworn in as Texas governor. The golden retriever quickly became known as the “First Puppy of Texas” and was frequently featured in photos from official events, holiday celebrations and social media posts throughout Abbott’s tenure.

Over the years, Pancake became a recognizable figure for many Texans who visited the Governor’s Mansion or followed the governor online. The dog regularly greeted guests at the historic residence, offering a lighter, more personal side of the governor outside the political battles taking place at the Texas Capitol.

The announcement prompted an outpouring of condolences on social media from supporters and Texans who said they had fond memories of meeting Pancake during tours and events at the Governor’s Mansion.

Golden retrievers are among the most popular dog breeds in the U.S. and are widely known for their friendly temperament and loyalty. According to PetMD, female golden retrievers typically live between 10 and 12 years, placing Pancake within the breed’s average life expectancy.

Pancake’s passing marks another loss for the Abbott family, which previously said goodbye to Oreo, their border collie, in 2017. Like Pancake, Oreo was a familiar companion during Abbott’s early years as governor.

While governors are often recognized for legislative priorities, executive actions and political campaigns, pets have long played a visible role in many governors’ mansions and the White House, often becoming well-known to constituents through public appearances and official photographs.

Throughout Abbott’s time in office, Pancake frequently appeared during holiday celebrations, seasonal decorations and informal moments shared by the governor’s office, helping personalize the administration for many Texans, per Trending Politics.

Abbott has not indicated whether his family plans to welcome another dog in the future.

For now, the governor’s tribute focused on remembering the companionship Pancake provided over the past 11 years.

“She will be greatly missed by all the Texans who met her,” Abbott wrote.

The announcement served as a rare personal moment from one of the nation’s longest-serving governors, whose public communications are typically centered on policy, legislation and state affairs. Instead, Abbott chose to share the loss of a longtime family companion whose presence had become intertwined with life at the Governor’s Mansion.
