Trump Warns Spain Migrant Crisis Could Happen in US if Democrats Retake Power
President Donald Trump warned Friday that the ongoing migrant crisis in Spain could be a preview of what awaits the U.S. if Democrats regain power in the upcoming midterm elections.
Speaking to reporters at Camp David, Trump pointed to the recent surge of migrants into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, describing the situation as a “catastrophe” and saying footage from the border “looks like an invasion.”
The president argued that similar scenes could unfold in the U.S. if Republicans lose control of Congress.
“That same thing is going to happen to us if the Republicans don’t get elected, except worse,” Trump said. “Much bigger, much easier to get into.”
Trump added that while his administration has strengthened border security, those gains could be reversed if Democrats return to power.
“We have the safest border in the world,” he said. “If we’re not in office, our country will be invaded at levels that made Spain look small time.”
The comments came after tens of thousands of migrants reportedly crossed into Ceuta, a Spanish territory on the northern coast of Africa bordering Morocco.
According to reports, many migrants entered the enclave after Spain’s Supreme Court ruled earlier this month that migrants intercepted at sea while attempting to reach Ceuta or Melilla could not be immediately deported.
Trump also criticized Spain’s socialist government for recently implementing a program granting legal status to hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants.
He described the country’s immigration policies as “bad management” and blamed “weak” and “very liberal” laws for encouraging the surge.
“They passed a couple of laws, and people read,” Trump said. “People are smart. They read from other countries.”
The president claimed those policy changes encouraged migrants to attempt the journey into Spain and warned the U.S. could face an even larger crisis under Democratic leadership.
“Nobody’s seen anything like it,” Trump said. “That will look good compared to what’s going to happen to the United States.”
Trump also repeated his criticism of former President Joe Biden’s immigration policies, accusing the previous administration of allowing millions of migrants to enter the country illegally, per the New York Post.
“The biggest thing, the worst thing that Biden did is allowing 25 million people into our country,” Trump said, adding that many of those individuals were criminals, though he did not provide evidence for the figure or claim.
The U.S. State Department also addressed the situation in Spain Friday, expressing support for the Spanish people and other European nations dealing with illegal immigration.
“The United States stands with the people of Spain, and all Europeans, against this egregious violation of their sovereignty and human rights,” the department wrote in a statement posted on X.
The department blamed the crisis on the Spanish government’s immigration policies and said the U.S. was considering actions to help protect Americans and assist allied nations confronting similar migration challenges.
Trump’s remarks come as immigration is expected to remain a central issue heading into the 2026 midterm elections, with Republicans arguing that stricter border enforcement is necessary while Democrats continue to advocate for broader immigration reforms.
