Deputies swarmed a Southern California golf course this weekend after spotting a man photographing security checkpoints just days before President Trump was set to arrive for a high-dollar political dinner.
The property, located in Rancho Palos Verdes and owned by the Trump family, was preparing to host a Republican National Committee fundraiser headlined by the president on Tuesday.
Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies moved in around 3:30 p.m. Sunday after observing the man surveilling the course and its security measures.
Authorities identified him as Jeanine John Taele, a 38-year-old Downey resident, according to reporting from the Los Angeles Times.
A pat-down search turned up a loaded magazine stuffed in Taele’s pocket, the first sign of a much larger weapons stash to come.
Deputies then searched his parked vehicle and pulled a loaded pistol and extra rounds of ammunition from the car.
The following day, investigators executed a search warrant at Taele’s Downey home and uncovered a far more extensive collection of firearms and gear.
Among the items recovered were an AR-style rifle that had been illegally modified, a .45 caliber handgun, body armor, and several high-capacity magazines.
Investigators also flagged notebooks pulled from the residence that reportedly contained “concerning statements,” along with a pair of radio communication devices.
Taele now faces charges tied to carrying a concealed firearm and possessing banned ammunition, including hollow-point bullets outlawed for civilian use in the state.
Detectives say he is also a person of interest in an unrelated robbery case out of nearby El Segundo.
Despite the scope of the discovery, sheriff’s officials sought to reassure the public, stating there is “no credible threat to our communities” as the investigation continues.
The scare unfolds just as Trump prepares for a rare cross-state trip through California and Nevada, a visit aides frame as an economic and public-safety pitch to voters ahead of the midterms.
Republicans are fighting to hold their congressional majority in November, and Trump’s West Coast stop is designed to spotlight differences with Democrats on crime, the border, and the economy.
The Daily Mail said it has requested comment from the White House regarding the golf course incident.
This is far from the first security threat Trump has faced since returning to national politics.
He was struck by gunfire during an outdoor rally in Pennsylvania in 2024, one of the most serious attacks on a sitting or former president in decades.
A separate case reached its conclusion in 2025, when a jury convicted a man of plotting to assassinate Trump at his golf club in Florida.
Just recently, an armed individual attempted to breach the White House Correspondents’ Dinner while the president was present inside the venue.
Beyond security matters, Trump’s California swing is expected to feature pointed attacks on Governor Gavin Newsom, who is widely seen as eyeing a future Democratic presidential run.
White House spokeswoman Olivia Wales previewed the trip’s messaging, saying the president plans to “draw a sharp contrast between his commonsense agenda and the radical policies of Democrats like Gavin Newsom.”
The Trump-Newsom rivalry has become a recurring feature of California politics, with the two trading barbs regularly, including Trump’s use of a mocking nickname for the governor.
Newsom escalated the exchange Monday, posting on social media about California’s minimum wage increase to $17.40 an hour set to take effect next year.
That figure is more than double the current federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour.
Newsom used the wage gap to needle Trump and congressional Republicans, writing, “Donald Trump and the GOP are still defending a $7.25 minimum wage while workers scrape by. Pitiful.”
The weapons discovery has added an unexpected layer of tension to a visit already shaping up as a political collision between the president and California’s Democratic establishment.
Officials have not said whether the notebooks or radios found in Taele’s home point to any specific plan targeting the golf course or the president’s itinerary.
The sheriff’s investigation remains active as authorities work to determine what, if any, connection exists between Taele’s actions and Trump’s scheduled arrival.
