Fans and critics alike took notice Saturday when the New York Democrat posted a video to her Instagram story revealing she had started the egg-freezing process.

Breaking from her usual approach of shielding her personal affairs from public view, the congresswoman explained why she chose to speak out this time.

“Usually, I keep my private life quite private, but I have made the decision to start freezing my eggs, and I want to share that with anyone who is — and I want to share this because I was weighing it for a very long time, and I think that, you know, I was saving for it for a very long time, and there just isn’t a ton out there, I feel, and sometimes it can feel very daunting,” Ocasio-Cortez said.

Her remarks quickly turned toward a wider critique of how little women are taught about their own bodies at various stages of life.

“And as women in general, we are not taught about our bodies, we are not prepared for our own lives, whether that is in puberty, whether that is in pregnancy, whether that is in perimenopause, menopause, whether that is in so many different aspects of our lives,” she said.

Video footage accompanying her remarks showed the congresswoman injecting medication into her stomach, a routine part of the fertility preservation procedure.

She offered a brief assessment of the injection immediately afterward, saying it “wasn’t so bad.”

From there, the congresswoman shifted her focus toward the ongoing national fight over abortion rights, tying her personal choice directly to that debate.

She placed blame squarely on the sitting administration for what she described as a hostile environment surrounding reproductive decisions.

“In the political context that we’re in, in an administration that is dedicated to politicizing women’s bodies and taking our choices away from us and punishing us around decisions to be pregnant or not be pregnant — and, frankly, this administration has made pregnancy more dangerous than probably at any point in the last 30 plus years — we’re gonna take our power back,” Ocasio-Cortez said.

“There’s also this flip side where you have to then grow up in the public eye in a time that most people usually get to grow more privately, and when you get elected later in life you’ve made all of your mistakes in private,” Ocasio-Cortez said.

Turning to gender dynamics in politics more broadly, she claimed female candidates and officeholders are judged by a standard their male peers rarely face.

“This is just not something that men deal with. Men run for office, or frankly, they interview for jobs and people don’t think in the back of their mind, ‘OK this guy’s running for office, how old is he? Oh, well is he gonna wanna start a family?’” she said.

She closed her video by casting the decision to freeze her eggs as a matter of personal empowerment rather than politics alone.

“This is a choice I am making to feel more in control of my life,” Ocasio-Cortez said.

Ocasio-Cortez has represented New York’s 14th congressional district since first winning election in November 2018 and being sworn in the following January.

Her 2018 victory at age 29 made her the youngest woman ever elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, a distinction she referenced directly in Saturday’s video.
